Professional Summary
Giselle Vasquez joined the Sinai Urban Health Institute in September 2008 as the Project Coordinator for the Helping Her Live (HHL) Program. Funded by the Avon Foundation the goal of the HHL program is to help women gain control of breast cancer and improve breast health outcomes for women living in Humboldt Park and North Lawndale. Giselle will take the lead in bringing health education workshops to the Puerto Rican and Mexican communities of Humboldt Park and ensure that all women receive timely breast cancer screening, follow-up and treatment, as needed. She will be responsible for navigating women to the services they need and coordinating of all outreach activities. Giselle will also provide oversight, guidance, and support to HHL Community Health Educators.
Prior to joining SUHI Giselle worked as a Health Initiatives Representative for the American Cancer Society coordinating cancer prevention events and programs to educate adults and children living in underserved communities. Giselle brings experience examining health disparities as a former research assistant with the Connecticut Department of Public Health, Surveillance and Reporting Unit. In this position, she developed a presentation on “An Examination of the Use Race/Ethnicity in State Health Disparities Reports” for the Connecticut Health Disparities Project and improved the statewide infrastructure for documenting, reporting, and addressing health disparities among racial/ethnic minority residents of Connecticut. Other work on health disparities include serving as a research assistant on a project that documented the barriers, health beliefs, and the effects of spirituality on accessing health care for Latina women living in Albany, NY.
