Project:

Westside Healthy Start

Introduction:

Healthy Start is a nationally implemented program designed to reduce infant mortality, incidence of low birth weight and racial disparities in perinatal outcomes.  Currently there are almost 100 different healthy start programs nationwide: in the Chicagoland area there are five healthy start programs serving the areas of Humboldt Park, Englewood, the Southeast Side, Chicago Heights/South Suburbs and the Westside.

Project Plan:

The Westside Healthy Start (WHS) Program is run by Access Community Health Network, one of the largest Federally Qualified Health Centers (FQHCs) in the country.  The program serves the communities of Austin, North Lawndale, East Garfield Park and West Garfield Park. These communities have an infant mortality rate 1.5 times higher than that of the city - during 1999-2001.  In 2002, the infant mortality rate in the WHS project area was 15.4 per 1,000 live births compared to 8.8 per 1,000 in Chicago.  The WHS program aims to reduce infant mortality and low birth weight births by 1) bringing more pregnant women into care earlier in their pregnancies through intensive community outreach, 2) providing comprehensive case management services to women at high-risk for adverse pregnancy outcomes, and 3) offering in-depth prenatal and parenting education to prospective parents.
