Professional Summary Ashley joined SUHI in 2008 to help manage and evaluate a comprehensive obesity prevention program for the Jewish school system in Chicago. The program was created in response to the findings from SUHI’s recent Jewish Community Health Survey. Prior to joining the SUHI team, Ashley worked as a Public Health Educator in the Health Promotion Unit of the Cook County Department of Public Health (CCDPH). In that role, she was a catalyst for community organizing and outreach, provided health education to suburban Cook County residents, and played an integral role in developing the Health Promotion Unit’s new strategic plan. She also served as Co-Chair of Maywood Health Initiative, a community-based participatory research collaborative with Loyola University, The University of Illinois Extension and CCDPH. Ashley worked for two years as an Assistant Project Manager at the University of Michigan Center for Health Communications Research. There, she oversaw the implementation of Eat for Life− a large-scale, culturally-tailored dietary intervention for Black Americans. Ashley was led to public health by her fervor for social justice. She is a women’s health advocate and also supports the right to access quality alternative health care. Her career focus is primary prevention of chronic disease, especially as it relates to cancer. She studies nutritional approaches to disease prevention, as well as environmental factors in disease etiologies.
